SMME and Skills Development: Building Inclusive Growth Through Investment

CEO BLOG: INVESTMENT SMME and Skills Development: Building Inclusive Growth Through Investment By the CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE), Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya At South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise, our approach to investment facilitation goes beyond attracting capital, it is about ensuring that investment delivers meaningful and lasting benefits for our local economy and communities. Across the South Coast, we are increasingly seeing strategic investment projects designed not only to generate financial returns, but also to drive SMME development and skills transfer. This is a shift we actively support and encourage. When investment is structured with intentional developmental outcomes, it becomes a powerful tool for inclusive growth. Sectors such as agriculture, agro-processing, retail and mixed-use developments provide strong examples of how this can be achieved. By embedding workplace based training, local procurement and value chain participation into project frameworks, investors can unlock opportunities for local businesses and job seekers from the outset. This means moving beyond once-off employment and focusing on building skills that are transferable, relevant and aligned to real market demand. At SCTIE, we advocate for investment models that include contractor development programmes, subcontracting opportunities for emerging enterprises and on-site skills transfer during construction and operational phases. These interventions enable local SMMEs to integrate into supply chains from construction and maintenance to logistics, services and product supply. Over time, this strengthens local enterprise ecosystems and improves the sustainability of the projects themselves. Importantly, this approach also supports labour market readiness. Skills development linked directly to live projects ensures that training is practical, responsive, and impactful. It equips local people with experience that improves employability while creating a pipeline of capable suppliers and service providers who can participate in future developments. Economic inclusion does not happen by chance. It requires deliberate planning, strong partnerships and a shared commitment between the public sector, investors, developers and communities. As SCTIE, we remain committed to facilitating investment that grows the South Coast economy while empowering local entrepreneurs and building skills for the future. When investment works hand in hand with SMME and skills development, we do more than grow projects we build resilient communities, competitive businesses and a stronger regional economy for generations to come.
Why I Believe the KZN South Coast is the Place to Invest in 2025

Why I Believe the KZN South Coast is the Place to Invest in 2025 Hello, I’m Dr. Vusumusi Sibiya, CEO of the South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE). I’m excited to welcome you to this first blog post, a chance to share why I’m so passionate about the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast and why I believe 2025 is the perfect time for investors to get involved! When I look at the KZN South Coast, I don’t just see a beautiful place, I see possibility. I see a region where communities are ready to grow, where ideas can take shape, and where investors can find both financial rewards and meaningful impact. Let me take you on a journey through some of the reasons I think this region is so special. A New Wave of Coastal Living Every day, I hear from people who are drawn to the South Coast because they want something more, a lifestyle that balances work, family, and the natural world. That’s exactly what’s on offer here. We have some incredible developments, from Renishaw Coastal Precinct, Serenity Hills and Bahari Bay to Injabulo Lifestyle Estate and Umdoni Point Coastal Forest Estate. These aren’t just properties, they’re communities built for the future, designed to respect our environment, while giving people the security and comfort they deserve. What excites me most, is seeing how these projects are attracting international interest. Investors from around the world are realising that the KZN South Coast, is more than a holiday destination, it’s a smart, sustainable investment. A Region that Feeds Itself and the World I grew up with a deep respect for the land and I’m proud of how the KZN South Coast is turning its fertile soil and warm climate, into real opportunity. Agriculture here is thriving! We’re known for sugar cane and macadamia nuts, but there’s also coffee, bananas, vegetables, diverse crops that fuel local communities and open doors for investors who see the value in agricultural processing and innovation. I’m particularly inspired by the Agri Tourism Route. It’s not just about farming, it’s about connecting people to the story of what we grow. And that’s a story investor can be part of, combining sustainability, with economic growth. Opening Up New Pathways for Trade One of the most exciting things for me, is how the KZN South Coast is opening up to the rest of Africa. Through the Eastern Seaboard Development project and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, we’re not just talking about trade, we’re making it easier and more profitable for everyone involved. It’s about turning this region into a gateway, connecting local businesses and international investors to the continent’s huge, growing market. Connectivity that Makes It All Possible If you’ve ever driven down the N2, you’ll know it’s the backbone of our region. With the Wild Coast Road upgrade, we’re about to see faster, safer connections that bring us even closer to key economic hubs. For investors, that’s a game changer, easier transport, lower costs, and better access to customers across the country. Celebrating Our Culture and Environment When I walk the Umzumbe River Trails or stand at the KwaXolo Caves, I’m reminded of how rich our cultural and natural heritage is. These aren’t just beautiful places, they’re projects that honour our past and open doors for the future. The Umzumbe River Trails are more than a 71km hike, they’re an invitation for private investors to create accommodation and hospitality offerings, that showcase what makes this region unique. Similarly, the KwaXolo Caves Adventures, with its zipline and future restaurant plans, is about blending history with adventure and creating real jobs for local communities. Making Investment Simpler and Faster Working closely with various investors, I understand how challenging it can be to cut through red tape. That’s why I’m proud of our One-Stop-Shop in the Ugu District, it’s there to support you. From paperwork to funding, we’re committed to making sure your investment journey here, isn’t just possible, but rewarding. Let’s Make This Journey Together I believe in the KZN South Coast, because I see its potential every day, in the people, the projects and the communities we serve. As SCTIE, we’re not just promoting investment opportunities. We’re inviting you to be part of something bigger, a region on the move, a community with vision and a future that’s ready to be shaped. Let’s make 2025 the year we build something extraordinary, together, on the KZN South Coast! Warm regards, Dr. Vusumusi Sibiya CEO, South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE).
